Reform case studiesÂ
Three of my research aims are:
-
To look again at notable reforms from a different angle to better understand their success or failure.
-
To highlight some neglected reforms that have played a critical part in creating essential foundations for better known reforms; and,
-
To share stories and materials from my own involvement in some notable reforms of the last 25 years.
As my research progresses, I will draw on the conceptual framework for reform I have developed to probe critical moments in reform through a mix of primary and secondary research. The case studies will increasingly examine reforms through this lens.

The first four cases revisiting work I produced at the IfG. I will share some resources which have not been published previously to give a more vivid inside picture of those reforms I was involved in. There is also a section on links and references for each case study to help those interested in going deeper into some reforms.

Future case studies will focus more strongly on the practice of reformers by drawing on the programme of semi-structured interviews I am planning for 2024 which will explore why and how they did what they did at those key moments in successful reforms.

Over the coming years I will be building further case studies drawing a mix of secondary and primary research:

If you had personal involvement in any of these cases and want to share materials, perspectives or join my interview programme please be in touch directly.

And I always welcome any thoughts, suggestions or challenges to the overall aims and programme of my research.
